Home birth Doula in the North East & Northumberland

Support from one of the UKs most experienced home birth Doulas.
Centring you & your journey, so you enter parenthood feeling like you can take on the world.

If you're here, you've already decided that your birth experience is too important to leave to chance...

Perhaps you haven't told many people that you're wanting a home birth; you’ve learned to keep this quiet. The thing you want most, the birth you can feel in your bones is possible for you - has become something close to a secret.

Because every time you let it out into the world, there they are: the eyebrows, the ‘Oh, you’re brave...’, the links people send ‘just in case’. And you spend the rest of the day quietly spiralling whilst trying to do the school run or make the tea, wondering: am I missing something here?

And underneath all of it; the research and the spiralling and the bracing yourself for the fight... is a deep, primal knowing that your body can do this.

That this birth could be the moment everything shifts; not just a birth to 'get through', but an initiation... A reclaiming.

You want someone by your side not just through birth, but this entire sacred, sometimes exhausting ride that is pregnancy: someone who is re-centring you as the authority in this experience - so that you can actually soften into the journey and enjoy this sacred rite of passage.

You want to step into Motherhood (or this next phase of Motherhood) feeling like the strong Matriarch you were born to be.

As your Doula I'm not here to be another 'expert' in the room; my superpower is in helping you to re-find your inner knowing... so that when you walk into birth, the only voice you're truly listening to is your own.

Serving women from the Scottish Borders, throughout Northumberland and down to North Tyneside and Newcastle areas.

Imagine this...

You’ve birthed your baby...

You’re resting in that golden stillness after your home birth, tucked up in your own bed, your freshly born baby nestled on your chest, the world hushed and sacred.

Your partner squeezes your hand, awe and wonder in their eyes; something between you has shifted permanently. Not just 'we had a baby together'... Something deeper

And you let out a deep exhale... old stories about what you're capable of dissolving as a new one is written... "I flipping DID IT"

Not 'I got through it'... Not 'thank god that's over' You did it. Fully, consciously, and on your own terms.

You made every decision, trusted yourself at every turn, and it brought you here.

And somewhere in that exhale - you feel them lifting... those stories you've carried for years about what your body can and can't do. About whether you're strong enough, determined enough, capable enough.

You look down at this baby and you just... know.

As the days, weeks and months pass; You're not Googling every noise, whether they're getting enough milk or trawling 'Hoslistic Mum' Facebook groups trying to make decisions around your parenting choices - because you've already spent months honing the skill of listening inward, because the self-trust you built in pregnancy doesn't stay in pregnancy.

This moment is available to you, and I've had the privilege of witnessing it more times than most Doulas in the UK (let alone the North East!)...

"Words can hardly describe how grateful we are for your knowledge, your support & your love. You have given us the gift of strength & courage, we would never have been able to trust in the natural process of birth without you.
Our birth was everything and more, with little 'E' being born en caul at 43+3 weeks surrounded by love at home. You supported me on every possible level - physically, mentally and spiritually and I will be forever grateful."

Meet your Doula...

Award winning best Doula North East

Hey, I’m Jess... award winning home birth Doula (Doula of the YEAR 2026 no less!) and creator of the UK's ONLY online Home Birth preparation course, Born at Home™

As the most highly sought after home birth doula in the North East, I’ve spent the past 8 years supporting home birthing families across Northumberland and the surrounding region including Newcastle, North Tyneside, Whitley Bay, Morpeth, and the Scottish Borders.

Most of the families I support are contemplating or planning home birth, and find their way to my support after feeling uncertain, conflicted, or unsupported elsewhere. They typically are ready to start making bold moves towards the birth of their dreams, but want that grounded 'wise woman' support of a doula.

My own path into motherhood and experiences of birth; from a 'high risk' hospital birth with our first born, to the incredible free birth of our second baby changed everything for me. It lit a fire in my heart to create spaces where women feel truly held, deeply informed and honoured as they birth their babies.

I've had the joy of supporting and witnessing over 600 couples as they prepare for and have their dream home or free birth; undisturbed, primal birth is where my expertise lies.

I do this work because I truly believe that pregnancy, birth and the early postpartum period are not simply experiences to get through; they are a profound rite of passage that every woman deserves to come out the other side of feeling powerful, whole and like she can take on the world.

How a woman feels as she moves through this time shapes her relationship with her body, her confidence, her partnerships and her capacity for self trust for years, often decades, to come.

I’m potentially not what you’d think of as a ‘typical’ doula... I’m actually a bit of a bougie bugger; my spa membership is an essential part of my existence and I'm a sucker for cosy country interiors and a designer bag.

I’m not an 'outwardly presenting hippie' (!), though I do love a bit of manifesting and spiritual ‘woo woo’. And (outside of pregnancy) you'll never find me in dungarees (no offence if you love them, you probably look amazing in them… I, however, look like a giant toddler).

I’m deeply passionate about women’s power, and sometimes get a little bit swear-y about it...!

When I’m not with my lovely clients... I’m usually at home at our Northumberland family farm with my husband (Farmer Richard!) and our two kiddos, navigating motherhood and all the beautiful chaos in between.

Kim's story...

"Jess isn’t just a doula. She is warmth and wisdom. She is safety and sovereignty. She helped rewrite my understanding of birth, not as something to endure, but something to treasure.

If you’re wondering whether to bring her into your birth space: do.

She holds it gently and fiercely all at once, and you’ll never forget the way she makes you feel...like the most powerful version of yourself."

On the day of your birth...

From around 38 weeks of pregnancy I’ll be officially on call, 24 hours a day, calmly and patiently holding space, ready to come to you whenever your baby chooses to arrive.

Those final weeks are where our connection deepens. I'm alongside you as the last curve balls come in from the NHS system (and there's usually something), so that spiral of "oh god, how do I navigate this" never gets to take hold. You already know exactly where to turn.

When your birthing time comes... I’ll join you wherever you are; whether that’s your candlelit living room in Northumberland, the bathroom floor of your Newcastle flat, or your birth pool in the Scottish Borders.

I'll have already visited you in your home at least once, during our nourishing, in depth birth prep sessions so that you feel comfortable and familiar with me being in your space.

I'll take care of everything around you - the pool, the candles, the drinks, the small details... so that you can stay completely inward, and your partner can stay completely focused on you. My kit is second to none, and everything in it is something we'll have already explored together, so nothing on the day is unfamiliar.

I'll be your anchor... for the tears, the laughter and the big releases, always attuned to what you and your partner need in each moment.

I work respectfully alongside NHS or independent midwives where involved, while keeping my loyalty firmly with you, your voice and your choices.

My role is never to lead or override, but to support you to stay connected to your own power and intuition, because that's where your transformation into this powerful, self confident version of you lives.

I'm trained in... hypnobirthing, biomechanics, rebozo techniques, labour massage and aromatherapy - but honestly, at most home births, what matters most is simply my trusting 'wise woman' presence is all that's really needed.

We were never supposed to go through the hugely intimate, sacred act of birthing our babies with strangers. Having me beside your side throughout your pregnancy and birth ensures you not only have someone on your team who not only deeply understands physiological birth, but also deeply understands you.

However your birth unfolds, I'm with you. Transfers, changes of plan, unexpected turns - once I'm your doula, I'm your doula.

Rachael's story...

With Jess I felt she could support me in protecting my space no matter which midwives turned up on the day. Jess was knowledgeable about all aspects of birth. She was always able to signpost us to evidence based information & her vast experience of home births were incredibly helpful when making my own decisions about my birth.

She checked in with me regularly & particularly when I was over due, she supported me to make the best decisions for me to ensure I could still get the birth I wanted.

Jess was exactly what I needed during labour. Her presence was so calming and supportive; she was always just where I needed her to be. When I felt labour pains in my legs, she was there to massage them without me saying anything. When I needed words of encouragement, she was there to give them to me.

She worked seamlessly with the midwives & my husband to collectively be the perfect team to support me. And this all created the perfect environment for my daughter’s birth."

When should I enquire?

Even though support within my packages begins at different stages of pregnancy, I recommend enquiring as soon as you feel a pull towards doula support, often in the first or early second trimester.

I tend to be booked at least 2 months in advance, and often closer to 6 months.

Reaching out early allows us to explore availability, ensure we’re the right fit, and gives you space to choose the level of support that feels most aligned.

If you’re wondering whether it’s “too early”, it almost never is.

Questions you might have...

My role as a Doula & what does the research say? Well, in my opinion there is no single 'generic' answer, as each doula brings different experience, training and perspectives to their work. To me, the support, knowledge and skills I bring to your pregnancy and birth are akin to the traditional birthy ‘wise woman’ who would have supported our ancestors through this sacred rite of passage. My role is not to observe or assess you in clinical terms, but to support your emotional, physical and intuitive experience. To calmly and quietly witness and hold a grounded, steady presence. To use my honed skills to intuitively support you, moment by moment, as you move through this profound rite of passage. The research: honestly, whilst these statistics are powerful, they still don’t fully capture the deeper emotional and psychological impact doulas can have on a couple’s experience of pregnancy and birth. But the evidence is clear. Research has shown that continuous support from a doula is associated with: Reduced risk of Caesarean birth † * Reduced risk of instrumental birth † * Reduced need for painkillers or epidural during birth † * Reduced rate of induction of labour † * Shorter labour † Increased parental satisfaction with the birth experience † Increased likelihood of initiating breastfeeding * Increased likelihood of successfully establishing breastfeeding & breastfeeding at 6 weeks * Lower incidence of depressive symptomatology † Improve equity and provide culturally responsive care # * Brigstocke S. Do you only attend home births? I'm the most experienced home birth doula in the North East & Northumberland; my experience, wisdom and passion lies in supporting couples who are looking to step outside mainstream care & claim a path which feels aligned for them. This (so far in my career!) has meant couples who are planning a home birth - but if you are planning on a MLU or hospital birth, but feel we would just be an awesome fit - do reach out and we can have a chat!

I'm finding you a bit late in the day... Will you have last minute availability? I do often get booked up many months in advance, sometimes as soon as that first period is missed! But, I do occasionally have 'later in the day' availability - so it's always worth reaching out!

What if I have to transfer in or change my home birth plans? Once I'm your Doula, I'm your Doula! A change of plans does not make me abandon ship... far from it! Changing your plans either in labour or before needs even more support, to ensure that you remain centred, heard and supported throughout that change. As it happens, in almost a decade as a North East birth Doula I have only ever once needed to transfer from home to hospital with a couple. And that was due to staff shortages, not an emergency. Aligned Doula support makes a big difference when it comes to home birth outcomes!
